Top 10 WrestleMania Matches

The site is going to be full of WrestleMania themed posts as we draw nearer to the show of shows, and rightfully so. The biggest show in wrestling history commands a lot of respect and every time around this year I wind up watching many of the shows over again. This has me thinking…what have been the very best wrestling matches in Mania history? To be more specific, the ten very best wrestling matches. Check out the list after the jump.

10.) Triple H vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Benoit, Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Championship, WrestleMania 20

The image of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit standing tall as champions at the end of this show will stick with me forever. Two of the very best were finally recognized as such. This match produces so many iconic images and was done so well. How could it not be with this three men involved? One of my favorite triple threat matches and number 10 on my list.

9.) Kurt Angle vs Shawn Michaels, WrestleMania 21

One of the very best pure wrestling matches I have ever seen. I remember watching this one live and being in awe of the work being done here. This two men stole the show at a pretty good WrestleMania. The build up to this match was excellent as well, with Kurt Angle trying to one up everyone of Shawn’s accomplishments. The WWE has perhaps never seen two finer athletes and this match proves that.

8.) Ric Flair vs Shawn Michaels, WrestleMania 24

Another one I will never forget. The story told by both men was amazing. The build up was perfect, and Ric Flair’s retirement was handled perfectly by WWE (terribly botched by Ric Flair). Shawn played the perfect role of a man that had a job to do, but ultimately didn’t want to do. Ric Flair’s last WWE match was perhaps his best. I teared up like everyone else watching and in the audience.

7.) Edge vs Mick Foley, WrestleMania 22

It is truly crazy the amount of careers Mick Foley has kick started. After this match Edge never left the main event scene. Both men stole the show at WrestleMania 22 and put on one of the best hardcore matches in company history. The Chicago crowd is electric throughout which always adds to the match as well. Foley got his WrestleMania moment and Edge became a house hold name. Another one I vividly remember watching live and also my reactions to everything. Epic.

6.) Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon, Ladder Match for the IC Title, WrestleMania 10

Two buddies going at it on the biggest stage. Nothing better. Razor and Michaels changed the game with one match. This ladder match is the prototype for all other ladder matches that followed. This was Scott Hall at his very best. Shawn would get better with age, but one could argue that this was their peak. Also, this was one of the first WWE matches to really play up the ladder as a weapon.

5.) The Dudley Boys vs The Hardy Boyz vs Edge and Christian, TLC 2 for the Tag Team Titles, WrestleMania 17

Nobody knew how they could top the triangle ladder match and TLC 1, but they did. TLC 2 still holds up as one of the most exciting matches in WWE history. The risks these men took and the spots they performed are second to none. TLC 2 in my book is the very best TLC match and the very best ladder match of all time. This was the peak of tag team wrestling, as all of these tag teams were more over then most of the singles roster. Something unheard of today.

4.) Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin, Submission Match, WrestleMania 13

Enough has been said about this match to last a lifetime. The match that kicked off the Attitude Era, revolutionized WWE, and made a superstar. I love it, because it is so simple in it’s perfection. No fancy spots, no crazy moves. Just two guys who hate each other, and pull out all the stops. The image of Austin at the end will live forever.

3.) The Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels, WrestleMania 25

A lot of people regard this as the greatest match in WrestleMania history, I love it a lot, but can’t put it that high. I even had a tough time choosing between this or their rematch at WrestleMania 26, both are excellent matches. I was at WrestleMania 26, but ultimately the first is usually the best in life and stands true here. 25 was an average WrestleMania at best and this match easily stole the show, but it would have probably done that on any card. Two of the very best of all time square off, two of the very best WrestleMania stars take each other to the brink.

2.) Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat for the IC Title, WrestleMania 3

The match that is on everyone’s list. The universally heralded match. This match changed the game in WWE, it proved that the big lumbering superstars were on the way out, and smaller, more athletic superstars could get over. Easily Steamboats finest WWE moment, possibly Savage’s as well. Everyone should watch this match in full, at least once.

1.) Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels, Iron Man Match for the WWE Title, WrestleMania 12

This was an easy choice for me. This match is my favorite match of all time, I have seen it countless times and never have any trouble re watching it. Each time I find something new to marvel at. The two very best of all time, in the best Iron Man Match of all time, at WrestleMania. Nothing gets any better in all of pro wrestling. Excuse the highlight video containing Creed, this is a harder match to find online.
